detroit church girl

detroit church girl, she

made this world bow

she is my mama

my auntie

Mizz Hattie down the street

she worked her ass off and

when you needed her she

stopped and picked you up

detroit church girl

we renamed Queen

she gave us ourselves in

big lights and ball gowns

told us to stop apologizing for

wanting that drink or

loving that so wrong man

we went to work

1st shift

2nd shift

3rd shift

midnights too

with her bellowing

in our ears ricocheting off our hearts

reminding us

detroit church girls who

don’t even go to church no more that

we matter that we’re worth it that

our strength is harder than garage

made hooch on a Saturday night

after a too much bad news week

she colored our tears and made the

world dance to our timing

she is us

we are she

Love this, Wanda! This struck me:
“…our strength is harder than garage
made hooch on a Saturday night
after a too much bad news week…”

    1. Well if you’ve ever had a ‘too much bad news week’ the only real remedy is garage made hooch or an Aretha Franklin singalong.
