a self-care: a “new” anthem

stanza one
woke up
a very real
headache ringing
in my head
seemingly
unconnected song
sauntering across
my mind

chorus
what if i what
i really need
isn’t more
sleep what if
what i really
need isn’t a bauble
or vacation or
new winter styling

what if what
i really need
isn’t a relationship
with a man or an
adventurous friend

what if what
i really need
is me?

stanza 2
there is only
one relationship
one connection
one union guaranteed
to last til my
dying day
to live a life
uncultivated
tragic

making everyone
outside of me
number one when
the only one left
the last day in
the last moment when
i take my last breath
is me

chorus
what if i what
i really need
isn’t more
sleep what if
what i really
need isn’t a bauble
or vacation or
new winter styling

what if what
i really need
isn’t a relationship
with a man or an
adventurous friendship
group

what if what
i really need
is me?

stanza 3
it’s time to
get to know you
who you are
listen

what do you
have to say
what are you
here to learn
what you
think
dive deep
explore

believe
what you need
know why
and where you
came from

chorus
what if i what
i really need
isn’t more
sleep what if
what i really
need isn’t a bauble
or vacation or
new winter styling

what if what
i really need
isn’t a relationship
with a man or an
adventurous friendship
group

what if what
i really need
is me?

i don’t know if this makes sense. if any of this makes sense. i do know that 30 days ago i decided to accept a challenge to write a poem everyday for 31 days. it’s promise i kept mostly because i’m ornery and secondly because it gave me a chance to explore my first love – the written word. here i am at the end of the challenge, grateful for the journey and ready to dive in to where this awakening will lead me next.

  1. It makes 100% sense to me. When I eat comfort food, I need me. When I long ti buy something just for the sense of treating myself, I need me. When I continuously check Facebook in the hope to connect, I need me. Etc.

Absolute sense. And a necessary reminder for all of us.
Yes: And Thank you. I am looking forward to seeing where this challenge leads you. You know I’m here for you. xoA

This is amazing. I am doing a Self Compassion study (in addition to this poetry project) and you have captured the essence perfectly. Thank you so much for sharing this journey!

    1. Thank you for reading! Self-care seems to be difficult for all. It’s almost an epidemic, the way we neglect ourselves.
