Langston’s church has palm tress
in the court yard
rock is the standard praise theme and
there are cup holders for coffee
in each of the seats

His playmates are the sons and daughters of
factory workers university professors and the unemployed
he likes that Ethan has blond hair and Isabella’s eyes slant heavenward
he of course sports a Mohawk and his big brown eyes still gawk at
the differences but thinks they’re cool all the same

The drums are his favorite and
he loves that they play them loud
a steady heartbeat calling him to
worship to sing to dance

It’s taken me some getting used to
the video conferencing and
multi media presentations I’m still
not too comfortable with the pressure to
‘like’ church on Facebook but

Before he goes to bed
his prayers of thanksgiving have
replaced raspberries and he asks real questions
now about God our Father and
wonders outloud if Jesus would like what he just said

I’ve adopted Langston’s church
palm tress rock and roll worship and
yes I’ve even liked it on Facebook
I thank God for this place with
the playscape at its heart and
love the idea that they call
children’s church ‘Discovery Island’ because

it’s here that a little drummer boy has
discovered Christ in him.
