#blackboyjoy

i remember them…

running laughing
screaming again in circles
they would spin
poking out pretend muscles
daring anyone who passed
to test their strength
talking big about conquering
roller coasters from the front seat
sharing football and baseball stats
quicker than multiplication tables
they worshiped gi joe but dismissed his
mission slayed monsters and told the
damsel to save herself slept with
drumsticks and the stray they
snuck in through their mama’s backdoor
they never questioned what tomorrow
would bring because they were too busy
unfolding today in their dreams
long before it was ever a hashtag to
counter recurring racist nightmares

we sat on porches
watching them
play chicken praying
they’d win

i took my son to a halloween party. i was so taken by the blatant joy of all the little boys in attendance i nearly fell in my chair. i wanted to lock them up in that moment when it seemed nothing could touch them…not even disappointment.

Love this, Wanda. “…slayed monsters and told the
damsel to save herself …” Out of the mouths of babes. xoA
